I studied with Sam in the 1970’s in NYC. Went to law school and the tuba was in the closet. Took it out when COVID hit and the immense impact Sam had on me as a person and teacher came flooding back to me. Now I blow nearly every day! And Sam is always nearby

Dear Mrs. Pilafian,

I am swept away with emotion at the loss of Sam. I am so sorry for your loss and my prayers go to you,  your family,  and Sam in Heaven. 
     In 1973 I got out of the 26th Army Band in Japan and headed back to New York. I started playing tuba at Your Father's Mustache and I did some subs,  as Sam was subbing in the Pop's Orchestra in Boston.  I don't know how Sam and I got connected but he was always very supportive of my playing,  and gave me gentile advise.  He knew I played String bass,  and was a doubler and this is certainly a shock to hear of his passing.  Later on when I was playing a solo at the Brass conference in Clem DeRosa's reunion big band,  Sam came up an was as usual supportive.  When I moved to Towson Maryland I gave him a call and we talked about tuba mutes. I was going to give him a call soon  as I am working on a method book on teaching. If you or your children in the future need to vent I am here 24/7 to listen,  with no advise.  Blessing to your whole family.  Ron Smith
