Herbert William Lapp, was born in a sod home near Eureka South Dakota June 10, 1925 to William and Magdalena Lapp. He grew up on the family farm with three brothers (Albert, Benny, Maurice) one sister (Lucille) and graduated from Eureka High School in 1942. He attended Wartburg College in Waverly Iowa. On November 2, 1947 Herbert married Irene Knoepfle at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka.
Together, Herbert and Irene owned and ran Lapp’s Clothing Store in Eureka along with Herbert’s brother Albert and wife Alice, until moving away in 1960. After moving to Lodi California, Herbert worked for Bailey’s Nursery. In 1974 Herb and Irene moved to Phoenix Arizona where Herbert owned and operated Ace Mobile wash until his retirement in 1990.
Herbert was an avid golfer. He was blessed with a natural, effortless swing that kept him golfing well into his retirement. Charitable works were a vital part of Herbert’s daily life. In retirement, he and Irene dedicated themselves to gathering and donating clothing to those less fortunate. Herbert and Irene also enjoyed traveling the world and visiting family and friends across the United States. Herbert was an active member at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where he routinely served as an usher. Herbert was also an entertainer – he loved to play the harmonica, play cards with friends and was always willing to serve as the MC whenever the occasion arose. He loved to laugh and always had a joke to share.
On Thursday November 22, 2012, Herbert passed away peacefully. He is survived by two daughters; Cindy (Ken) Jacobs of Phoenix Arizona and Nancy (Dean) Mikel of Stewartville Minnesota; brother Albert (Alice) Lapp and grandchildren Seth Jacobs, Jenna Crawford, Kari, Lauren and Miah Mikel and three great grandchildren, Logan, Gwen and Zarabeth Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Irene, to whom he was married for over 60 years. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 30th 2012 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church 3641 N. 56th Street in Phoenix Arizona.
