Hank was born to Lee Hong and Wong Shee Tom in Toledo, OH, and was the second of five children, Frank, Anna, Edison, and Donald. Husband of the late Jean Wee, they shared 61 happy years together, and raised 4 children. Hank attended the University of Toledo, earning a BS in Chemical Engineering, getting his Professional Engineer’s license, and eventually earning an MBA from AZ State. Hank and Jean moved to Phoenix in 1954, where he began his career at AirResearch as a Lab Technician, working his way up to Chief Project Engineer in the aerospace industry and retiring 36 years later from Honeywell. He built the rustic family cabin at Bear Park, where the family would spend many cooler weekends away from the Phoenix heat. Hank was actively involved in his kids’ activities and the community, and was elected President of the Phoenix Union High School Board. He loved to play tennis in his spare time and the engineering side of him loved to tinker and build gadgets and gizmos to make something more efficient and work better.
He is survived by sons Mark, Steve (Karen), Scott (Jen), daughter Carole (Ray), and grandchildren Tiffany (Brian) Tuthill, Brian Tom, Danielle and Alex Tom, Sharyn, Nathan and Andrew Tom, Kristen and Lexine Kagiyama, great granddaughter Emily Tuthill, brother Donald Tom, and many other extended relatives. Hank is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Frank, Anna and Edison, and wife Jean.
Private funeral services will be held. Friends of the family are invited to join in a Celebration of Life Open House for Hank, Saturday Dec. 2, 2017 between 2:00 and 5:00 pm, at 2215 E. San Juan, Phoenix.
