Dr. Helen Elizabeth Nebeker (Helfrich, Ph.D.), 90, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 15, 2018. She was the wife of Aquila Chauncey Nebeker, Jr. and the mother of two children. Helen is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years and by her only son Aquila Chauncey Nebeker, III. Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Paige Falls, 4 grandchildren and 5 great- grandsons.
Education was very important to Helen and against all odds, she achieved a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. to become a Professor of English at Arizona State University, Tempe, teaching there from 1957 to 1988.
Helen, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served in many capacities, but she especially loved her many opportunities to teach all ages in the Church. She enjoyed teaching the Gospel Doctrine classes for over 30 years.
Helen joyed in challenge, discovery, achievement. Intellectual discourse was her delight. But in the competition of her life, she was known as a woman of integrity – charitable, warm, compassionate, a friend who never betrayed a trust. Above all, Helen valued her family, her home, her friendships and her Faith. These were the anchors of her life.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 10:30 AM in the LDS chapel at 9565 E. Larkspur Dr., Scottsdale. There will be an hour to visit and renew “auld acquaintances” in the Relief Society Room preceding the service. A private graveside service for the family will be held at the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery following the funeral.
