Hazel is survived by her daughter Sharon Kay Huggins, of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren Joseph Robert Finklea of Gilbert, Arizona; Karen Shea Juntti of Mesa, Arizona; Phillip Thurmond Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, and Samantha Juntti of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister Oleta Butler of Norman, Oklahoma and eight great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by husband Joseph Everett Huggins of Phoenix, Arizona; her daughter JoAnn Huggins of Phoenix, Arizona; her granddaughter Jill Robin Finklea of Phoenix, Arizona; as well as her parents and 6 of her siblings.
Hazel was born on June 26th, 1925 in Mountain View, Oklahoma to parents Arthur Otto Kleeman and Nellie Essie Kleeman. She married Joseph Huggins, a salesman/photographer/carpenter/entrepreneur and WWII Veteran in 1943. Over 1944 to 1946 the couple welcomed two daughters into their home and Joe and Hazel began raising them. Her children and grandchildren remember her as a gentle mother and grandmother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. After moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1946, Hazel began working with her husband in their different businesses including a furniture store, carpet cleaning business, and photography studio.
Hazel was accomplished at basketball and often challenged her grandchildren to a driveway game of hoops. She loved to read and complete puzzle books and was a huge fan of the Phoenix Suns. She was a generous individual who loved her church and who was passionate about educating students at bible study. She was an active and dedicated member of the Thomas Road Baptist Church and often volunteered at voting locations and blood drives throughout her lifetime.
A funeral is scheduled for Thursday July 16th, 2020 10 AM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024. A visitation will be held at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary Bethany Chapel 710 West Bethany Home Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85013 on Wednesday July 15th from 3 to 5 PM.
