The best mother and grandmother anyone could ever hope for, Georgia is most dearly remembered for her devotion and generosity to her family. Family and friends also remember her as a classy lady who was always so kind and sweet.
Georgia was born on March 25, 1931, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of George E. Martin and Margaret (Durham) Martin. She grew up in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood on tree-lined Montview Boulevard, one of the city’s first boulevards. She often reminisced about, as a child, waving to U.S. Presidents as their motorcades passed her house on their way from the airport to downtown.
In Denver, Georgia graduated from Graland Country Day School in 1944 and from East High School in 1949. She attended the colleges now known as Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado.
In 1977, Georgia and her family moved to Paradise Valley, Arizona, after falling in love with the Valley of the Sun on spring vacations. She moved to Scottsdale in 1993 and then to Carefree in 2021.
Georgia was a longtime member of Cherry Hills Country Club in the Denver area and Paradise Valley Country Club in the Phoenix area, where she enjoyed playing tennis and bridge. At Cherry Hills, she served on the welcoming committee for the 1978 U.S. Open golf tournament and on the planning committee for various charity balls and fashion shows. Highlights included when she was pictured prominently in The Sunday Denver Post as a key part of the Hillsdilly festivities in 1973 and 1976 and as a leader of the Bal de Ballet committee in 1974.
Georgia was the mother of three children: Thomas W. Donohue, Jr. (Jeri L. Dube) of Carefree, Margaret E. (Donohue) McNally of Phoenix and Daniel M. Donohue, deceased. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Margaret’s sons: Philip D. Donohue, Benjamin F. McNally and Jack M. McNally.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 30 years, Thomas W. Donohue, Sr.; her brother, Gerald M. Martin; and her sister, B. Maurine Martin.
Always on the go, Georgia led a full life of 91 amazing years! Georgia’s family and friends will always remember the little things that made her special and fun, such as her impeccable style, her love of clothes and purses, her beautiful handwriting, her fondness for red, pink and other bright colors, her spaghetti sauce with V8 juice in it, her Ghirardelli chocolate cakes that she made for family birthdays, her banana bread that she made for holidays, her Toll House chocolate chip cookies that came out better in Colorado’s high altitude, her Chinese cooking that she learned in the 1970’s, her hard work in making every Christmas special for her family, her needlepoint hobby in the 1970’s, her mall walking at Scottsdale Fashion Square and Paradise Valley Mall, and her zeal for spectator sports, particularly the Denver Broncos, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Phoenix Suns.
A funeral mass for Georgia will be held Monday, December 19, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 16245 N. 60th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85254. A graveside service will follow on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Crown Hill Cemetery, 7777 W. 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
