George was the only son of Walter Kenneth Tweedy and Mary Jane Tweedy (maiden name Sikes) and was born in Phoenix, AZ on November 1, 1931. George’s only sibling is his sister, Joan Graham, who still resides in Phoenix.
George’s father, Walter K. Tweedy, was an officer in the National Guard and was on active duty before and during WWII. From 1937 until 1942, Walter and his family were stationed in Columbus, GA; Lawton, OK, and Abilene, TX before Walter was sent to the Panama Canal Zone and the rest of the family returned to Phoenix, AZ. Colonel Walter Tweedy spent the duration of the war in the Canal Zone. His wife Mary and children, Joan and George, were able to join him there for a time after the end of the war. Upon returning home, Colonel Walter Tweedy joined the Phoenix law firm of Marks and Marks as an attorney.
After returning to Phoenix, George attended Madison Grade School and in his free time he loved to ride his pony, Shorty. North Phoenix High School came next and George graduated in 1950. During high school he had a part-time job working for the phone company (washing cars, etc.) and through this employment he was encouraged to and did attend Arizona State College (now ASU) from which he graduated with a B.S. degree in Industrial Arts in 1954. While in college, George was in the R.O.T.C., followed by some time in the National Guard. Upon graduation from ASC, Mountain Bell moved George into a management position. George stayed with the phone company (Mountain Bell or ATT) until his retirement in 1984.
George married Janet L. Thompson of Phoenix in 1952 and together they had two girls and two boys – Susan K., Douglas G., Erin L. and Scott L. Tweedy. They lived in Phoenix and then Scottsdale for many years until George and Janet were divorced in 1970.
In 1974 George married Dora Eastin, who also had four children – Bob, Karen, Robyn and Debbe Bolton. At this time, the Tweedy kids and the Bolton kids were all in their late teens or twenties and all eight were born within a ten-year age span.
George and Dora were the love of each other’s lives and not only supported each other, but together they assisted, supported, guided, occasionally bailed out, and certainly loved all of their collective children and extended family, including children’s spouses, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family gatherings at George & Dora’s house and the cabin in Strawberry, AZ. were frequent and enjoyed by many. Though never preachy, they both showed their belief in the Lord and dedication to their church by their actions and deeds. Following their relatively young retirements they both focused much of their time on service to others.
George’s beloved wife Dora passed away in August 2014. George was dedicated to her and stayed by her side as illness slowly took her life.
George always loved animals and over the years raised birds and had pet skunks, dogs and cats. Two cats gave comfort to him until his death.
George is survived by his children Susan Tobias, Doug Tweedy, Erin Tweedy and Scott Tweedy, his stepchildren Bob Bolton, Karen Bolton, Robyn Finsterwald and Debbe Lapeirre, his sister Joan Graham, and nieces Diane and Sharon, eleven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
