October 3, 1950–September 12, 2023
George was born in Chicago, Illinois and lived in Flossmoor, a suburb of Chicago, for all of his early life. The youngest of Cedric and Violet Slain’s three children, he graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School. At Indiana University he earned his BS and MBA degrees in five consecutive years.
After graduation he became a banker in California. As a very young man he was charged with opening a new branch office. While in California he became an advisor to Pacific Resources Incorporated which later recruited him to Hawaii to be its Treasurer.
In 1989 he married Nancy Wright McKibbin. They immediately relocated to Melbourne, Australia with Nancy’s seven-year-old son, John-Patrick Wright McKibbin. In Australia George was an Assistant Treasurer for BHP, the largest company in Australia at that time. In 1994 George was transferred back to the U.S. where Houston, Texas became home. While there George traveled internationally doing project finance for BHP.
When his tenure with BHP ended, the family returned to Kailua, Hawaii on Oahu where George helped establish the Hawaii Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company and served as its Chief Financial Officer.
George and Nancy lived part time in Salt Spring Island in B.C. for five years, and they also lived another seven years on the Big Island of Hawaii. In total, George lived over thirty years in his beloved Hawaii. In 2015 George and Nancy relocated to Prescott, Arizona.
George revered nature. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved scuba diving, hiking, and camping, especially in remote areas of the western US. A skilled woodworker, prodigious reader, thoughtful inquirer, and profound thinker, George was an exceptionally kind and gentle soul whose motto was, “What good shall I do today?”
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Unity of Prescott, 145 S. Arizona Avenue beginning at 12:00 noon in the labyrinth and continuing in the fellowship hall.
