Affectionately known as “Bill,” George Wister McAfee, Jr. died on May 22, 2019. He was born on August 27, 1936 in Lancaster, South Carolina to the late George Wister McAfee, Sr. and Doretha Cureton McAfee.
After graduating in 1954 from Barr Street High School in Lancaster, South Carolina, George enlisted in the United States Air Force, completed a tour of duty in Japan, and returned to Fort Fisher in North Carolina. On June 16, 1962, he married Josephine Carmon in Conway, South Carolina. While serving in the Air Force, George was stationed in Germany, Texas, Colorado, and Arizona. In 1978, George returned to Luke AFB in Phoenix and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant after serving 24 years in the USAF. He worked 3 years as a contractor for the Saudi Arabian government and then owned and operated a service maintenance company in the U.S. for another 25 years. In his spare time, George was an avid spectator sportsman, enjoyed traveling, held leadership positions in The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), and was active in Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and The American Legion.
George is preceded in death by George Wister McAfee, Sr., Doretha Cureton McAfee, Ella Marie McAfee, Lewis " Pete" McAfee, Louise McAfee Tims, Dorothy " Dot" McAfee Ebron, and Elnois McAfee Monroe.
George is survived by wife Josephine C. McAfee; daughter Gina (Damon) Knight; grandchildren: Jasmine and Jordan Knight; siblings: Ruby (J.T.) Perry, Alice (Lee) Erwin, Thomas (Hyacinth) McAfee, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in memory of George W. McAfee to support the Stem Cell Transplant Program at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.
