George Pete Grevas, beloved husband of Nita Sabos (Babe) Grevas and doting father of his daughter, Gail Grevas, passed away on March 22, 2016, following a long illness and convalescence. Born July 10, 1922, in Madison, Illinois, to the union of Pericles and Nota Grevas, both from Greece, he and his devoted and loving wife, Babe, were married August 27, 1950, in Detroit, MI.
Instead of pursuing a career as a baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, he enlisted in the Navy during WWII, serving principally on the USS Twinning 540 in the Asian Pacific as a radioman, 3rd Class. He participated in the liberation of the Philippines and received several campaign medals. Trained as a machinist and automotive mechanic, he worked for American Airlines as a crew chief for plant maintenance in St. Louis, Mo; Tulsa, OK; and Phoenix, AZ for a total of 35 years. He found time to coach “The Greeks” softball teams in the City of Phoenix Softball League during the 1960s and 1970s, which brought them numerous championships and trophies. George considered among his most significant sports accomplishments that of his bowling prowess (shooting a 285 game) and making a hole-in-one on the golf course.
George was always available to help his friends with any type of repairs, and following his retirement from American Airlines served as the go-to person for the maintenance of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Phoenix. It was during the course of the performance of his maintenance efforts at the cathedral that he met with an accident which in effect crippled him for the remainder of his life.
In addition to his loved ones mentioned earlier, he is survived also by his best friend, a bowler and a golfer, Dean Tsantilas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Katherine’s Philoptochos Society in care of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1973 East Maryland, Phoenix, AZ 85016.
Trisagion and Funeral Services will be on Thursday, March 31 at 11am at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 1973 E Maryland, Phoenix. The Interment will be at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 E Shea Blvd., Scottsdale.
Arrangements under the direction of A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Bethany Chapel, Phoenix, AZ.
