Gene was born in Jackson, Minnesota to Edwill Leon Muir and Ella Violette (George) Muir. He attended Jackson High where he ran track and played on the Bluejays football team. He was very proud of his service in the Air Force, where he was promoted to Airmen First Class well ahead of his peers through his knowledge of the complicated circuitry of the microwave radio systems he worked on the Distant Early Warning (DEW) line during the Cold War. He graduated Arizona State University and worked most notably for Honeywell for 18 years and IBM for 32 years.
Gene dedicated and thoroughly enjoyed many years as a Little League coach and Boy Scout leader. Camping was always a hit, but the challenging family backpacking trips were the most memorable. He found it hard to wait for ASU and Cardinal football to begin in the fall.
Grandpa Gene was the kindest of souls that everyone loved from his brothers and sisters to grandchildren, to every nurse, mechanic and store clerk who crossed paths with him. His strong work ethic brought the family through hard times as he lived a life of dedication to family and gave everyone an example to live by. In his retirement years, he was able to enjoy time with his younger grandchildren and make them feel they were special, as he in turn was, to them.
Gene is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley Jean, his children Cindy, Christian and Carrie, twelve grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sister Marian, and brothers George and John, beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alan, and sisters Janice and Gwen.
Services will be conducted at Greenwood Memory Lawn in the Serenity Chapel, 719 N 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009 on Thursday October 8th beginning at 10a.m. with viewing 30 minutes prior and graveside service and receptions following. We sure miss “Dear ‘ol Dad” and he will forever be in our hearts.
