Elmer Lamar Emmons, 92, of Tempe, AZ, passed away on August 9, 2020 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Seattle, WA, on February 11, 1928, son of the late Elmer Sherman Franklin Emmons and Ruth Virginia Elliott.
He is predeceased by his brother Ray and his sister Ruth Marie. He is survived by his spouse, Marian Elaine Emmons, and their six children Nancy, Karen, Sharon, Daniel, Kimberly, and Stephen. He is also survived by his sister Sherrie, four children from his first marriage Chris, Nancy, Gail, Linda, and his combined total of 34 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Elmer Lamar graduated from Queen Anne High School and then served in the United States Navy 1949-1953, where he was honored as the “ideal recruit” and served in the Korean war. He studied at Brigham Young University graduating with a bachelor’s degree, and later attended Life Chiropractic College where he earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Elmer Lamar enjoyed music and was active in the school choir, orchestra, marching band, and dance band. He played in a little western band in Seattle and won first prize on Tex Ritter’s program, as well as played for the USO on several occasions. He played the guitar, bass fiddle, and bass drum.
Elmer Lamar was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many roles within the church over the course of his life including Sunday school teacher, stake missionary, teacher’s quorum advisor, ward teacher, and counselor in elder’s quorum presidency to name a few. He enjoyed his work with the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed being a Seminary teacher for one year.
Elmer Lamar loved working as a Chiropractor for many years and owning his own Chiropractic business toward the end of that career. When he retired, he worked as a security guard for the last of his working years. He had an infectious smile and spread joy in the lives of everyone he came in contact with.
A viewing will take place at Resthaven/Carr-Tenney Mortuary & Memorial Gardens located at 4310 E Southern Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85042 on Saturday August 29th starting at 9:00am. There will be a memorial service at the same location starting at 10:00am and immediately following the funeral, there will be a brief graveside service.
