Our Beloved Mother, Elizabeth L. Shull, 94, of Glendale, AZ passed away unexpectedly on January 23, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Maryvale Baptist Church, 5702 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix, AZ. A luncheon will follow in Wilcox Hall immediately after the service.
Elizabeth was born September 4, 1923 on the family farm near Hazel Dell, IL, the daughter of Mahlon H. and Hazel M. (Harrison) Welker. She married H. Dean Shull on June 21, 1942 about a year after meeting him at the ballpark in Casey, IL. After living four years in Casey, IL, they moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1947 for Dean's health issues. Dean preceded her in death in 1978 after 35 years of marriage. They had 4 children: Betsy (Jim) Sickler, Neil, Sr. (Cyndi) Shull, Melissa (Danny) Owens and Jane (Phillip) Williams and nine grandchildren; Neil Jr. and Kevin Shull, Lisa Stout, Sherry Sickler, Holly Anderson, Krista Curtis, Wesley Sickler, Christopher and Matthew Williams. She has 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.
Elizabeth was a "stay at home" mom working multiple part-time jobs until her children were in school. She took courses at Phoenix Evening College to improve her working skills and took a full-time job with the Alhambra School District in 1966. She ended her career there as payroll clerk when she retired in 1983 after 17 years of service.
Elizabeth and her husband liked playing pinochle and bridge. After her husband’s passing, she joined a group of seniors who enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling. She also loved to line dance and participate in sing-a-longs. Additionally, Elizabeth expressed her creative side through painting and sewing.
An active member of Maryvale Baptist Church for 50 years, she lived a life of faith… loving, trusting, and following her Savior. She loved her family deeply, leaving them a wonderful legacy to follow. Her joyful personality and caring ways touched the hearts of her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean, son Neil "Randy" Shull, son-in-law Jim Sickler, sisters: Margaret Barnett, Virginia Fogelman and Evelyn Holsapple and brother, Robert Timmons.
