Dr. Thomas J. Maxwell, Jr., M.D. passed away on 3-24-14 at the age of 91. He was the only child of Allie Jane and Thomas Maxwell, Sr. He was born in Gentry, Arkansas, but moved to Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 11 for his health. Both of his parents were teachers who established Mrs. Maxwell's Tutoring School, which was famous in the city for many years. Dr. Maxwell attended the University of Southern California and was initiated as member of Chi Phi Fraternity. He served as an Ensign in the Navy in World War II, and also attended Arizona State University. Dr. Maxwell's first career was in real estate sales with Russ Lyon Realty and he later owned Tom Maxwell Realty before leaving to attend medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis at the age of 39. He began his medical practice in Sun City as one of the first physicians in the then newly established Del Webb community. Dr. Maxwell was in private practice for 28 years before his retirement in 1996. Tom married Mary Margaret Ure in 1947, and they are the parents of five children: Margaret Maxwell (Anthony Daykin), Thomas Maxwell, III, M.D. (Deborah Kalaf Maxwell), David Maxwell (Lucia Steffen Maxwell) and Sarah Lorraine Maxwell. He is predeceased by his daughter, Katherine Joan Maxwell. Their grandchildren are Thomas Joshua Maxwell, IV, Katherine Riley Maxwell, Jessica Lynn Maxwell Jana (Jonathan Jana), David Leonard Maxwell (Rachel Denning) and Nathan Alexander Maxwell. Great Grandchildren include Emma Trowbridge and Ethan Cohen. Dr. Maxwell is also survived by his sister-in-law Ellen Ure Farber and niece, nephews and great nephews and great niece. He was a devoted husband and father whose primary joy was his family. Visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m and a memorial service will be held March 29, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the A.L.
