Darryl S. Pickett, 60, formerly of Rome, New York, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2022 at Hospice of the Valley Inpatient Care Home in Surprise, Arizona after an 11-month battle with lung cancer. Darryl "Big D" was born on April 11, 1962 in Rome, the son of the late Robert and Eleanor Pickett. From the small towns he grew up in, to graduating from Camden High School in 1980, and even his love of everything YANKEES, he was proud to be from “upstate” New York.
Darryl honorably served in the United States Navy from October 14, 1980 - March 04, 1982. Shortly after leaving the Navy, Darryl began a long career as a truck driver working for various companies and traveling all across the United States over more than 20 years, making him the most reliable GPS system any of us ever had. An accident in 2004 ended his truck driving career, but Darryl took that as an opportunity to reinvent himself as a Salesman, finding his niche in Industrial Sales where he never met a stranger. Darryl was also a member of the American Legion Post 44 and the Mason Trinity Lodge No. 710 in Canton, OH.
He is survived by his two daughters, Amber and Nathan Runnels and Jennifer Pickett; his five grandboys Morgan, Christian, Gavin, Nolan, and Dillon; brothers Tom and Nia, Michael; sisters April and Dennis Landry; Dawnelle and Angelo Fields; Cindy; Ellie and Lamont O'Shei; Melanie and Wade Riegler; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members who he loved very much. He was predeceased by four brothers Mark, Robert, David and Norman.
At Darryl’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service at this time. His daughters ask that friends and loved ones remember and celebrate him in the unique ways and places that meant the most to you and him. A celebration of life will be held in Rome, New York at a later time. Updates will be made by the family once plans are finalized. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to either the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center or Hospice of the Valley. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff members of Palo Verde Cancer Specialists in Scottsdale, John C. Lincoln Medical Center in Phoenix, and Hospice of the Valley Inpatient Care Home in Surprise for their care and support during his time at each facility.
