Clyde Roy Caviness, aged 96, was born June 24, 1927, in Durango, Colorado to Clifford O. and Helen I. Caviness. He passed away peacefully March 26, 2024 in the home of his youngest son in Glendale, Arizona.
Clyde grew up around Horse Mesa Dam above Canyon Lake and later in Tortilla Flats. His family moved to the Phoenix valley where he finished high school and drafted into the military serving in both the Marines and as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force.
It was during a bus ride back to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, from his parent’s home in Phoenix, Arizona, that he met his first wife Billie J. Bugg. They were married in Florence, Arizona in a Presbyterian church on May 22, 1951.
Clyde was married several times after the dissolution of his first marriage. He is survived by his children Clifford Caviness, Scott Caviness, Celeste Stanley, Mark Caviness, Suzanne Cluff and Marion Beveridge.
After Clyde's stint in the military, he attended the University of Arizona where he graduated with a degree in Geological Engineering. Settling into his career in Ray, Arizona, with the Kennecott Copper Corporation, later hired by Bear Creek Mining and Exploration. The rest of his career was a consultant in mining exploration and development up to his retirement. Clyde has been a fixture in the copper mining industry since his first job as Pit Geologist in Ray, Arizona.
Clyde's interests included Arizona indigenous people studies, rockhounding and folk music along with gem and mineral collecting.
Clyde lived a life that was rich in travel, adventure and music. He was a good humored
man with all the foibles and flaws of life. There are many fantastical stories and bittersweet memories of both his immediate and extended family. He was well loved by those closest to him and will be missed by many.
A graveside service for Clyde will be held Monday, April 15, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 North 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009.
