Charlie Walker of Tempe passed away Monday, February 20. He was 76, and suffered complications of a fall late last year. He is survived by his wife Beverly, daughter Vera of Tempe, son Dave and daughter-in-law Judy of New Orleans, sister Judy DeArmond of Merriam, Kansas, grandson Mack of Portland, Oregon, and granddogs CoCo and Sugar of Tempe. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Dr. Maurice and Marguerite Walker. He was a graduate of Argentine (KS) High School and the University of Kansas, where he also obtained a masters degree in electrical engineering. He taught in the engineering department at Arizona State University in the mid-1960s, and helped pioneer the school’s earliest computer-science curriculum. He also taught at Kansas State University before entering the business world in Chicago. After working for the Department of Energy at Idaho National Laboratory, he returned to Tempe in 1981 to work as a computer consultant, then for Valley Bank/Bank One/Chase until retirement. He was a lifelong learner and enthusiast for trains, aviation, classical music, physics, Egyptology and geology.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
