Charley was born in Holdenville, OK to W.W. “Whit” and May Baker in 1927. After leaving Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl years, the family settled in Chandler, AZ where Charley went on to excel in sports in high school.
After serving and being wounded in the Korean Conflict, Charley returned to Phoenix and attended Grand Canyon College on two athletic scholarships. His love of sports would follow him into his career as a physical education teacher, coach and athletic director.
If not on a ball field, Charley could be found at his church where he served as a deacon for over 60 years. He will be remembered as a man of honor, integrity and a sincere heart for service.
Charley was predeceased by his parents, Whit and May Baker and brother Jesse “Jake” Baker. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice (Burghout), daughter Lisa Baker Apostolides (Steven), brothers L.E. “Sharkey” (Leona), Doug (Patsy), and Randy (Jan) Baker, sister Lois Ruppert, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
