Virginia McCain Kelly, 89, formerly of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. EST Saturday, February 23, 2013 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431 N., Phenix City, AL with Rev. Wayne Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. prior to the service. A private burial will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Kelly was born in Langdale, Alabama, daughter of the late N.E. and Neaty Aaron McCain. She later moved to Phenix City where she graduated from Central High School in 1941. Mrs Kelly went on to graduate from Emory University's Nursing School in 1944. She married her late husband, Wymon T. Kelly in 1946 and they raised their three daughters in Phenix City, Alabama. Mrs. Kelly was a long time member of Central Baptist Church. She was the director of the Cobb Hospital Nursing Home and later studied at Miami Heart Institute and became coordinator of the cardiac care unit at Cobb Hospital and retired from Cobb Hospital in 1983. After being diagnosed with macular degeneration and losing her vision, Mrs Kelly continued to inspire those around her as she participated in the Lakewood Baptist Amen Choir and later danced her way into the hearts of her fellow residents at Monarch Estate Senior Living Facility in Auburn, AL. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Wymon T. Kelly, her granddaughter, Kelly Michelle Medlock and her brother, Edsel McCain.
Survivors include her three daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and John Price of Auburn, AL, Melinda and Lewis Harden of Wetumpka, AL, Kay and Richard Kennedy of Salem, AL, sister, Hazel Cliatt, grandchildren, Clay, Jay, Race, Haley, Lindsey, Joshua and Kaci, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
