Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert F. Hoffman, U.S. Navy (Ret) age 83, passed away at home on Thursday, January 18, 2018 in Salem, AL. He was born on March 01, 1934 in Black Creek, NY to the late Francis B. and Ava A. (Frazier) Hoffman. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served around the world to include Guam, Dominican Republic, Cuban Crisis and served in support of the Korean War. In 1960 he was one of 150 nuclear specialists assigned to the world's first nuclear aircraft carrier the USS Enterprise. During his 22-year Navy career he received numerous medals and honors to include Korean Service Medal, China Service Medal (Extended), National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
He loved to talk about his life growing up on the farm with family and friends, his horses were always the highlight of the conversation. There was never a dull moment when he talked of his Navy career and the life experiences he had while serving. His zest for life and good humor will live on in the hearts of his family.
He is survived by his widow, Virginia L. (Householder) Hoffman; daughter, Bobbie F. Woodruff of Niagara Falls, NY; Son, Robert F. Hoffman Jr. and Fiancé Michelle Cutshall of Salem, AL; Son, James R. Hoffman of AL; 2 Step-Daughters, Cheryl Bryan of Grove City, OH; Mrs.Jackie (Charlie) Brown of Virginia Beach VA; Step-Son, Mr. Donald (Barb) Rothrock of Salem, AL; Sister, Joan Harris of B.C. Canada; Brother, Mr.
Raymond (Mary) Hoffman of Angelica, NY; 2 Step-Sisters, Barbara (Razy) Grant of Alberta, Canada; Diane (Hoffman) Kofchak of Wilkes-Barre, PA; 12 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren.
Predeceased by: Brother, Bernard F. "Pete" Hoffman; Son, William G. Hoffman;
Daughter, Cynthia L. Church; Step-Daughter, Deborah K. (Rothrock) Hager.
No visitation or funeral services have been planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society.
