She began her educational experience at Cedar Bluff School in Cedar Bluff, AL She graduated from Coosa County High School in Rockford, AL in 1959. Johnnie earned an education degree from Troy State University. She was an elementary teacher in the Ozark/Enterprise, AL area.
Johnnie was married to the late Dr. Peter Dawkins and was the mother of two sons. The Dawkins family made their home in Phenix City for over fifty years. She had great compassion for the plight of the American Indian and old unkempt cemeteries.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Dr. Peter Dawkins and her beloved son, Brad Dawkins; also, her sister, Judith Harris Parker.
She is survived by her son, Deryal Dawkins of Phenix City, AL. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Warren of Montgomery, AL, her brother, Dr. James Michael Harris and his wife, Jane Neese Harris, of Virginia. She leaves a number of beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held Friday, April 26, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. EDT in Lakewood Hall at Striffler-Hamby in Phenix City, Alabama; the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of her, to the National Pancreatic Cancer Association.
