Command SGT Major Howard Lee Givens (Ret) age 75 of Salem, Alabama passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024 peacefully at his home. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, Soldier and Christian.
Celebration of Life Funeral Services will be held at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 21, 2024 in Lakewood Hall at Striffler-Hamby in Phenix City, AL. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be held 11:00 am Monday, February 26, 2024 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.
Mr. Givens was born December 15, 1948 in Graceville, Florida and was the ninth child of the late Connie Lee and Audra Mae Kirkland Givens. He was drafted in the US Army where he had an illustrious 24 year career, serving 6 tours in Vietnam and missions in Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, and Afghanistan. He was a three time Purple Heart recipient and earned a Bronze Star for Valor, as well as the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He retired as Command Sergeant Major and an American Hero. He continued to mentor and guide young Soldiers throughout his life, long after his time in the Army.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances K. Givens.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Elizabeth Givens, son, Matthew Givens and wife, Maria and their children, Kalei, Kona and Kawika.
