A proud Army veteran, Jose's dedication to his country spanned over 27 years of active duty and active reserve service. During his military career, he completed esteemed programs such as OBC, OAC, and CAS3. His exemplary service was recognized through numerous awards, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with a 20-year device, and the Army Commendation Medal. Before his military service, Jose demonstrated his love for physical activities and sports. He was an accomplished athlete, excelling in rugby, soccer, and track during his youth. As a standout track star at PSJA High School, he graduated in 1978 with accolades for his speed and fitness. Jose's love for learning led him to the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA), where he earned his degree. Early in his career, he also served as a labor and delivery assistant, showcasing his versatility and compassion. Known for his saying, "Embarrass yourself so nothing can embarrass you," Jose lived life with humor and a fearless spirit. His kindness, friendliness, and outgoing nature left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He had a profound love for music, movies, and Mexican food, filling his life with vibrant and joyful experiences. His legacy of service, kindness, and joy will continue to inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to have known him.
Survived with deep sorrow by his two children, Cody Baird Garcia, Omar Lukas Garcia; his mother, Guadalupe S. Garcia; four siblings, Juan M. Garcia Sr., Ernesto Garcia, Guadalupe Santoyo, Fernando Santoyo; many more family and friends.
Jose Luis is preceded in death by his father, Fernando Garcia and his brother, Luis Santoyo.
A viewing will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Palm Valley on Monday, July 1, 2024 from 5pm to 10pm with a prayer service at 7pm. Services will continue Tuesday, July 2, 2024 with a burial at 11am at Rio Grande Valley State Veteran Cemetery.
