Willie D., as he was often called by his family, was the second child of the six children born to this union. Willie D. was educated and attended Kealing Junior high and the old L.C. Anderson high school before it was desegregated. While in school he loved playing basketball, he was known for his powerful and magnificent skills on the basketball court, and his gentle, quiet demeanor outside of the court. After high school, he furthered his education at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas where he was a dynamic member of the HT basketball team. Shortly after leaving college, he enlisted in the Air Force branch of the U.S. Military where he served 4 years of active duty. Upon leaving the armed, forces he was a dedicated employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he was a Pole technician for a number of years, and then continued his career in the Mid 80’s for the Capitol Metro Transportation Authority as a Bus operator until his retirement in 1993.
Willie pledged his life to Christ and served as a faithful member of St. James Missionary Baptist church until his illness. On June 25, 2012 after a lengthy illness, God saw fit to call Willie D. Edwards, Jr. home. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie D. Edwards, Jr. and Martha A. Edwards.
He is survived by his three children who faithfully loved, adored and affectionately still called him “daddy”, Willie D. Edwards, III (Jeanette) of Austin, Texas, Regina C. Reese (Havean) of Pflugerville, Texas, and Michael D. Edwards of Austin, Texas. He was a loving and devoted brother to five siblings, Gladys M. Ellison of Austin, Texas, Calvin E. Edwards of Austin, Texas, Gwendolyn L. Doss of Austin, Texas, Andrew L. Edwards of Austin, Texas, and Martha A. Edwards of Austin, Texas.
He leaves to cherish his memories, seven precious grandchildren, Kendrick T. Edwards, Traivon D. Edwards, Arayla L. Reese, Trenisshay Q. Edwards, Cameron D. Edwards, Willie D. Edwards, IV and Rheagan S. Reese; one very special Aunt, Frankie Mae Thornton; and one lifetime friend, Richard Templeton; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A viewing will be held Sunday, June 24 from 5:00pm -7:00pm at Cook Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 25 at 1:00pm at St. James Missionary Baptist Church 3412 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Austin, Texas.
