Ruth was born in Alpine, Texas to Forrest and Jean Stout, on February 16, 1941. She was the older sister to brother Chuck, and the family lived in Texas during their childhood. In 1958, Ruth married Buford Woodrow Duke, Jr, in Dallas. They moved to Austin, where Buford graduated with an architecture degree from UT. After graduation, they moved to Houston, and their daughter, Belinda, was born in 1961. After their second daughter, Tanya, was born in 1963, Buford and Ruth moved to Virginia, where Ruth’s parents lived. Ruth raised her daughters, worked as an administrative assistant, attended church, went camping, and hosted many lovely parties and dinners. The family moved to Oklahoma in 1976. It was there, at the age of 38, that Ruth graduated with a library science and art degree from Central State University, in Edmond, in 1979. Soon after, Buford and Ruth moved back to Austin, so that he could teach at his alma mater. Ruth worked in the LBJ school there, as well. Ruth went to work as the librarian for the Florence School District’s elementary, middle, and high school libraries. She worked in Florence for many years, until getting a job at Lee Elementary in Austin, where she retired in 2001. She loved reading and storytelling with her students.
Ruth was talented with textiles, making handcrafted rugs, weavings, and crosstitch pieces, specializing in Frank Lloyd Wright designs. She loved Sudoku and Mahjongg, and was adept at both. More than anything, Ruth loved spending time with her family, friends, and cats.
Preceding her in death was her first husband, Buford Duke, her second husband, Hugh Winn, and her parents, Forrest and Jean Stout. Ruth is survived by her daughters Belinda Avey of Georgetown and Tanya Duke of Ingram, her granddaughters Ashley Avey (Gary McCreight) of Austin, and Jennifer Hanna (Justin Hanna) of San Antonio, her grandson Tyler Avey (Brenda Mata) of Austin, her great grandson Luke Hanna of San Antonio, and her brother Chuck Stout, of Virginia. She is missed by so many family members and friends, as well.
We wish to thank Dr Danijela Levacic and Dr Mithula Gopalam, and all the staff of the Wesleyan IL, AL, Laurel Hall, Scenic, and Hospice.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 2:00pm at Wellspring United Methodist Church, 6200 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78633.
