He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps/Air Force for over 33 years and retired honorably in 1970. He served in WWII, Korea and during Vietnam. After his retirement, he worked for the Gary Job Corps Center for three years. He also worked for the Commission for the Blind for 17 years, and then retired for the final time.
He is preceded in death by Frances Tyre, his loving wife of 45 years; his parents, his sisters, Bessie Butner and Dorothy Mozee; granddaughter, Yvonne Gauthier; two nieces, Jean Dibble and Zephyr Ann White; two nephews, Y’von Mozee and Lonnie Franklin.
He is survived by four sons, Norman and wife Loretta Tyre, Oscar Lee Tyre, Thomas Tyre, and Arthur Ussery and wife Merline; two daughters, Norma Jean Tyre and Mary Chappell; and his grandchildren, Norman III, Ingrid, Rick Major, Reginald Major, Andre Major, LaTonya Johnson, Shannon Major, Tiffany Major, Timothy Major, Arthur Chambliss, Carl Chambliss and wife Yvonne, and Dion Ussery. He is also survived by numerous other family members and friends.
