Norma was born on August 25th, 1923, to Bertha and Erich Fischer in Paige, Texas. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on October 7, 1925, in Hills, Texas and confirmed on March 21, 1937, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in The Grove.
At an early age Norma worked in the fields with her parents and siblings while also attending school. She graduated from the seventh grade on May 28, 1937. Norma came to Austin around the age of 15 or 16 and worked as a nanny for the Coates family. She came home on the weekends by bus and her father would pick her up from the bus station. The Coates had neighbors, the Navarro’s, and Norma became friends with their two daughters. Their father was a professor at the University of Texas, and he encouraged Norma to apply for a job at the University. She took the advice, was hired, and started in the Purchasing Department. Norma promoted to an administrative position in the Chemistry Department and worked for Professor Williams, a nutritionist, and later worked for Dr. Reed in the same department. Norma retired in 1984 after 35 years of service with The University of Texas and was proud of her achievements and was given many accolades along the way. Norma always made wise decisions, was a smart investor and a prudent saver.
Norma rented rooms at the beginning of her time in Austin and somewhere around the early 1960’s she bought her first home in Austin. Norma’s home was close to her brother and sister in-law, Myron and Kathryn, and there were many evenings they would walk over to her house and visit, or she would come to their house. In the Mid-1970’s, Norma purchased a larger home in North Austin. She lived there many years, and somewhere around 2009, she decided to sell her home and move to an independent senior living community. Norma enjoyed 11 years there, and in 2019 moved to an assisted living facility in Austin. In her younger years, she enjoyed walking with neighborhood friends, exercising, traveling with family and friends to include spending many weekends visiting with her siblings. Norma was always a good friend to those around her and those that had the opportunity to know her, loved her. She always enjoyed playing dominoes, cards and loved spending time with her family. The highlight of Norma’s week was having her hair done and being pampered at the beauty salon. Norma has always been a classy lady, dressing fashionably with matching jewelry and wearing make-up every day of her life.
Norma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas for over 80 years. She loved the Lord and showed this in her everyday life. She was faithful to the Church and God and lived a wonderful life.
