The Man, The Myth, The Legend
Nathan Leroy Jones, 71, of Bastrop, Texas transitioned to his heavenly home on Monday, July 15, 2024. The second son of the late Valetta (Byrdsong) and R. D. Jones, Nathan was born in Fort Worth, Texas on September 8, 1952. Following his 1970 graduation from North Side High School, Nathan attended Tarlton State College until enlisting in the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1972. During his tenure in the USAF, Nathan earned the rank of Staff Sergeant, honorably serving his country as a technical controller (“Water Walkers”) until 1980. He earned his associate’s degree in Electronics/Computer Science from Community College of the Air Force. Following his military service, Nathan worked in Telecommunications and Information Technology until his retirement in 2018.
Nathan actively participated in the Boy Scouts of America in Fort Worth, with his father serving as Assistant District Commissioner of the Longhorn Council. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1968. He was a devout Christian, who accepted Christ as a young age and was active in his church. Nathan served as a Lay Speaker at Thomson Chapel United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. As a Wesley United Methodist Church member, he sang in the Intergenerational Choir and the Men’s Chorus, served with the United Methodist Men, and participated on the Pastor/Staff-Parish Relations Committee. In everything he did or aspired to do, Nathan always put God first.
He married the love of his life Jacqueline Saunders on June 21, 2008, and as promised in their wedding vows, they served Christ together. Nathan enjoyed traveling, playing golf, creating unique hand-made gifts using his sandblaster and laser etcher, and taking every opportunity to enjoy what he called the PPW (perfect patio weather) for relaxing and grilling in his outdoor kitchen.
Nathan was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Ivan, Reliford, and Marcus, and his grandson Eric. Nathan will forever be cherished in the memories of his wife, his daughter Kimberlie (Adam) Garcia, his son Julius (Tracey) Jones, his grandson Ian Auston, his sisters LaVordyce (Corrie) Harris and Marcelyn (Willie) Forrest, and a host of family and friends whom he loved dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas.
