Lillian Vandermast Boyd, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home, under Hospice Austin care, on January 24, 2013, after a courageous battle with heart disease and cancer. She was born in Washington Heights, NY, and lived in Fairlawn and Elmwood, New Jersey until moving to Texas in 1955. She and her immediate family settled in Austin, and she later retired to Cedar Creek (Bastrop County), Texas.
Lillian was an amazing person. Her career ranged from being a housewife and mother, Medical Librarian at the Texas Medical Association, to establishing her own business and becoming certified as a Master in porcelain doll-making. She and her first husband, Leonard, traveled all over the US contributing their talents under their hobby name of Lill-Len Dolls. She won numerous blue ribbon awards and recognition as the “Indian Doll Lady”, creating Indian Dolls in authentic native costume. Her love of doll-making showed in every one-of-a-kind piece she created.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, John and Julia Chiko, her devoted and loving first husband of 63 years, Leonard Vandermast, Jr., and her siblings, John Chiko and Eleanor Mann. She is survived by her second husband, Fred G. Boyd of Cedar Creek, TX; her children, Leonard Vandermast III of Apollo Beach, FL and Diane Chaison Davis of Cedar Park, TX; and sister, Ruth Lotterman of New Jersey. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends who loved and cherished her being in their life. She was especially devoted to and had a loving, close relationship with grandsons Bill, Steve, and Bobby Chaison and their families. All will miss the bright light and happiness she brought into their lives.
Special thanks to the caregivers from Hospice Austin and wonderful doctors and staff from Texas Oncology and her church family and friends from the Haynie Chapel United Methodist Church in Del Valle, Texas for their support in her later years of life.
