Lee Edwards, 85, passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday morning, May 14, at Cedar Ridge Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, in Cedar Park, where she had lived since October of 2007. And she woke up in heaven, just as Buck had hoped and prayed.
Born as Rose Lee Hege in Winston Salem NC on June 26, 1927, she preferred to be known as Lee. She moved to Austin TX in 1968 with her husband and children.
Lee was a loving and devoted wife, a devoted mother of four, a wonderful homemaker, and delighted being with family and friends. Her love for her children knew no boundaries, and she was equally adored by all of her family. Lee enjoyed reading, dancing, traveling especially cruises and shopping.
Lee's favorite book and movie was Gone With The Wind, so classic and so beautiful, she probably watched the movie more than Clark Gable's grandkids. Her library was full of many books with her favorite author being Danielle Steel.
When Lee wasn't reading she was dancing. Buck and Lee really didn't dance, they floated on the dance floor. They belonged so many dance clubs: the Lords and Ladies, Sundowners Square Dance Club, Waltz Club, Mayfair Dance Club, Tuesday Nighters, Saturday Nighters, and Austin Ballroom Dancers. Being on the dance floor in Buck's arms was something Lee never forgot.
Traveling for Lee was always a major packing challenge and she had plenty of chanc-es to perfect her technique. She would get to go on many cruises with Buck. Seeing Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Saint Lawrence River, Jamaica, Panama and Puer-to Vallarta, Mexico were a few of her favorite trips.
However, shopping was Lee's first and best hobby. Her Cadillac could get to “The Mall”, all by itself before GPS systems were a standard feature. Petite Sophisticates had Lee on speed dial. And Lee rarely met a pair of shoes, size 4 AAAA she couldn't resist.
Lee was a dedicated and devoted wife and mother of three generations, but also an avid reader, smooth dancer, talented traveler and a savvy shopper, to be sure.
Lee was preceded in death by her oldest son Charles M., III (Kip) and her parents, Samuel and Mildred Hege of Advance North Carolina. She is survived by her hus-band of 61 ½ years, C. M. (Buck) Edwards; three sons, Mark Edwards and wife Johna, Mike Edwards, Ken Edwards and wife Regina. Lee, known as “Nanny”, is survived by to Grandsons John Mark Edwards and wife Nicole, Hayden Edwards, Austin Edwards, and Luke Edwards; Great Grandsons Jackson Edwards and Corbin Edwards; and Great Granddaughter Alivia EvelynRose Edwards. She is also survived by her sister Mary Louis Dunn and husband Johnny of Winston Salem NC and her brother, Bob Hege and wife Bobbie of Greensboro NC along with many nieces and nephews back in the Carolinas and surrounding states.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Cedar Ridge Alzheimer's Specialty Care in Cedar Park, for the love and compassion they showed Lee and Buck during Lee’s illness.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Friday, May 17, 2013 in the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011, www.alz.org.
