John graduated from Greenville High School in 1953 and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force.
John served his country with honor in the Air Force for twenty-one years. He was a war veteran having served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1974, he started a second career at the Austin State Hospital. He worked at the Austin State Hospital as a supervisor for twenty-nine years.
John was a very hard worker and an independent thinker. He raised his five children to know the importance of working hard and earning what you receive in this life. He was known to tell anyone who would listen how proud he was of his children.
John was a faithful member of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church for forty-nine years where he served as a Sunday School teacher and a Deacon. He was very proud to note that Revered Dr. Marvin C. Griffin, former Pastor of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church, baptized all five of his children.
John’s faith in the Lord sustained him throughout his life. He knew that he was a child of God and relied on that relationship to manage life’s challenges.
John always maintained a healthy lifestyle. He consistently ate healthy foods and was an avid runner. He jogged daily until he had a fall at the age of 79. After that accident, he did continue to participate in regular workouts at a local gym until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
