Janie was born on October 30, 1932 in Giddings, Texas to the late Pedro Hernandez and Tiburcia (Avila) Hernandez.
Janie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was employed for 16 years in Human Resources with the City of Austin, retiring in February 1996 after making countless lifelong friends. Janie can be forever remembered for her love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, family and her cats “Gigi” and “Sky”. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She married Johnny Contreras, who passed away unexpectedly in 1964. Janie was a widow for 20 years before she fell in love with and married Jesse M. Garza, in August, 1984.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Jesse M. Garza; three sons, George Contreras and his wife Angie of Pflugerville, Texas, David Contreras and his wife Rebecca of Hutto, Texas, John Contreras and his wife Noemi of Dripping Springs, Texas; one daughter, Debra Contreras of Austin, Texas; step children, Gary Garza and his wife Diane of Arlington, Texas, Tommy Garza and his wife Karen of Austin, Texas, Dave Garza of Arkansas and Gina Garza of Austin, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well as many extended family members and close friends.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Yolanda Martinez.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Saint Albert The Great Catholic Church, 12041 Bittern Hollow Drive, Austin, Texas 78758 with Father Matthew Iwuji officiating. Interment will follow at Cook Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
Visitation for family and friends will take place at Cook Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service being recited at 7:00 p.m.
