Jim was born on November 20, 1934, to Robert and Mary Alice Shaffer, of Pennsylvania. Jim’s first career, and one of the things he was most proud of, was serving his country in the U.S. Air Force. He is a veteran of the Korean War. During his stint in the military, he met the love of his life, Patsy Dunlap, whom he married December 22, 1956. He and Pat, whom he cherished, celebrated their 60th anniversary last year.
After his military service, Jim was a technical writer for Tracor, on high level military aircraft and equipment. He and his wife also owned The Ark Christian Bookstore, in Austin, for more than 20 years. He was very active in street ministry for Austin’s homeless and in prison ministry. He served the Lord with his whole heart, in any way that he could.
Jim is survived by his wife, Pat Shaffer, daughter Kimberly Matus and her husband Benny, daughter Deanna Shaffer, son Thomas Shaffer and his wife Debra, and son Jeffery Shaffer. He is also survived by grandchildren Joseph Meyer and wife Shelby, Levi Matus and wife Sasha and their daughter Edith, Kathryn Matus, Brandon Burkland and wife Shannon, Christopher Shaffer, Kaitlyn Jackson, Chelsea Tetrault and her husband Billy and their son Liam, Taylor Jackson and fiancé Jesse Loter, and Madison Shaffer. Jim is also survived by one brother, one sister and many nieces and nephews.
Jim is predeceased by his precious grandson Michael James Shaffer and by his parents, one sister, three brothers and his in-laws.
If there was a wish that Jim had for anyone, it would be that his life would lead others to Christ.
Jim will be laid to rest on November 16th at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, in Pflugerville. Visitation is at 2:30 and services begin at 3:30, with burial to follow.
