James spent most of his life serving the public during his 41 year career in law enforcement. He worked as a highway patrolman, was the Chief of Police in Bay City, Texas and worked as a special investigator for the State of Texas. He also had a love of sports and worked as a sports writer in San Antonio for many years.
He was a religious and faithful man who mentored and helped many people during his life. As a member of First Baptist Church of Pflugerville, he volunteered countless hours to the food pantry. During the construction of the church he served as a night watchman. He also loved raising race horses.
James’ first wife, Doris Jean McWhirter, passed away on February 21, 2005, leaving behind her two sons, Bennett and Scott. He is survived by his wife, Peggy McWhirter of Austin and his daughter, Jacqueline and husband Jim of Bay City. He is also survived by Bennett and wife Kathy Foster of Carrollton and Scott Foster of Houston. He was blessed with five grandchildren, Chelsea Ferguson, Alyson Mitchell, and Heath, Andrew, and Nicole Foster and three great grandchildren, Emily Bowers and Lexi and Gage Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2011 in the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
To continue James’ commitment to help those in need, the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations of non-perishable food items be brought to the funeral service to benefit the First Baptist Church of Pflugerville Food Pantry.
