Jim passed away on Wednesday March 4, 2015 after a long illness. He was born in Waco, Texas on September 18, 1926. The son of John and Emma Harrell, he was the fourth of seven children.
He graduated from The University of Texas in 1948. He earned a Masters degree from Stanford University, and completed all but his dissertation for his PhD at American University in Georgetown.
Jim served in the Marine Corps in WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam (2 tours), and The Dominican Republic during his military career. He was decorated with the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation and many campaign medals.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Jim was called into ministry. He completed a Masters of Divinity at The Austin Presbyterian Seminary. He served United Methodist congregations in Garfield, Pflugerville, and Industry Texas.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Thomas and Douglas, and sisters Lucille, Lillian, and Lorraine. Jim leaves his beloved wife of 66 years, Adrienne; sister, Pat Gates of Waco, TX; son, E. James Harrell and wife Louise of St. Paul, MN; daughters, Martha Elizabeth and husband Dean Fleming of San Antonio, and Hope and husband Wayne Hennecke of Tomball; grandchildren, Steven Fleming and Amy Fleming both of Dallas, Alan Harrell of Minneapolis, Matthew Hennecke and wife Lauren of Durham, NC, Andrew Hennecke and wife Katherine of Abilene, Robbie Harrell of Minneapolis, Patrick Hennecke of San Angelo, and Kevin Fleming of San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Churches of Industry, Pflugerville, Northwest Hills in Austin or Haynie Chapel in Garfield, Texas.
