He was born April 17, 1937, to Wilbur and Grace Eyler of Piqua, Ohio. He graduated from high school in Springfield, Ohio, in 1955 and entered the army. He served until 1958. He returned to Springfield and attended Whittenberg College. He worked in the field of computers doing mostly computer programming. In 1959 he moved to Houston, Texas, and worked for the Johnson Space Center. In the subsequent years, he moved several times, living in Los Angeles, California, New Mexico, Ohio, Austin, Texas, and Georgetown, Texas. He set up his own company in Colorado Springs, Colorado, doing computer consulting. Later he went to Seattle, Washington, and then back to Round Rock, Texas.
While in Houston, he met Linda Aylor, and the two were married on August 27, 1967. Jim and Linda were married for 25 years and had two daughters, Kim (46) and Katrina (40). Jim remarried on January 10, 2009, to his current wife Jewell Ellis, whom he adored.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Grace, and his brother John. He is survived by his wife Jewell; daughters, Kim Herber and husband Keith; Katrina Peterson and husband Scott; stepdaughter, Laura Oberts and husband Phil; granddaughters, Kasey, Lauren, and Shelby Herber; and grandsons, Dalton and Devon Peterson.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North Interstate 35, Pflugerville. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 7, 2011 at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, Texas 76542. A Memorial service celebrating Mr. Eyler's life will follow at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2011 at United Christian Church, 3500 Parmer Lane, Austin.
