Isaac Bell Jr., born on January 23, 1933, to the loving Mrs. Lillian Solomon Joyner and Mr. Isaac Bell Sr., was a beacon of strength, wisdom, and grace. His departure on September 18, 2023, marked the culmination of a life overflowing with warmth, resilience, and captivating charisma that left an indelible imprint on countless souls.
Isaac's early years unfolded without the presence of his biological father, Mr. Isaac Bell Sr., who passed away when he was but an infant. However, life, with its uncanny balance, ensured he was cradled in the guidance of a devoted step-father, Mr. Maurice Joyner. Isaac's heart found another anchor on December 23, 1968, when he intertwined his destiny with Mary L. Bell, cherishing their union for over 55 memorable years.
In the vast tapestry of the cosmos, Isaac reunites with his mother, Mrs. Lillian Joyner; both fathers, Isaac Bell Sr. and Mr. Maurice Joyner; infant son, Michael Phillip Bell; daughter, Patrice "Cissi" Bell-Devine; son, Isaac "Bubby" Edward Bell; grandson, Marvin King Jr.; and brothers, Maurice Joyner Jr., Joe Thomas Bell, and Christipher Joy.
Left to honor his legacy are his loving wife, Mary L. Bell; children, Carita Guyton (Larry), Jennifer Bell, and Danny Bell (Tawny); and a constellation of grand-children, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Isaac's service during the Korean Conflict showcased his valor and commitment. His sociability shone bright in Texas's hospitality scene, especially at the Austin Club (located within the historic Millett Opera House), Villa Capri, and the Driskill Hotel, where he forged invaluable connections with the state's business and political luminaries.
During the early days of his union with Mary, Isaac's affection for dogs was already evident. There was "Cindy", a fiercely protective German Shepherd, "Drake", another majestic German Shepherd, and "Roskoe", a stately Collie. Each of these loyal companions holds a special place in the tapestry of memories, exemplifying Isaac's enduring love and bond with animals.
Isaac's journey of nurturing animals began even before the establishment of the Lockhart farm. In the confines of their East Austin home's backyard, Isaac initially cared for a horse (Rocky) and pony (Tricksy), alongside lively chickens, honking geese, and playful rabbits. As his passion and collection grew, the need for a more expansive space became apparent. This led to the purchase of the sprawling 20-acre farm in Lockhart, TX, where Isaac's devotion to the land and its creatures was palpably felt. With the collaborative effort of family members, they constructed barns, diligently cleared cockleburs, erected barbed wire fences, and baled hay, transforming the vast terrain into a lively and thriving sanctuary. This farm became home not only to the animals from his backyard but also to cows, goats, and other creatures. Among its residents, two animals shared an exceptional bond: "KlueJoe", a former stray whom Isaac transformed with patience and care into a beloved companion, and "Rocky", his cherished horse. Their deep and genuine camaraderie persisted until Rocky's passing, an event that profoundly impacted KlueJoe, leading to her subsequent departure shortly after.
A golf enthusiast, Isaac was an integral member of the traveling Black Golfers Association. Venturing often to San Antonio, he cherished tournaments and camaraderie. Many of his golfing friends have since passed on, yet memories of spirited New Year's gatherings at the Bell residence remain vivid.
Isaac Bell Jr.'s life was rich, not only in experiences but also in the relationships he nurtured over the years. Central to his heart was his favorite cousin, Barbara Ruth Owens Bell (Arthur), with whom he shared countless memories, and laughter. Equally cherished were his special friends, Charles and Margaret Taylor. Their bond was a testament to the depth of friendships that transcend mere association and venture into the realm of family. These individuals, among many others, added layers of warmth, understanding, and joy to Isaac's journey, making it even more meaningful.
A special note of appreciation goes out to Jackie Addy, a dedicated CNA and personal caretaker. While primarily caring for Mrs. Mary Bell, Jackie voluntarily extended her warmth and expertise to Isaac, considering him her second father. For nearly three years, Jackie ensured Isaac's well-being, punctually attending to appointments and ensuring he took his medications. Her bond with him was deep, often reminiscing about his spirited responses to doctors – "Do yo thang!" and "Whatever you say."
Isaac Bell Jr.'s life was a magnificent tapestry woven with love, challenges, and timeless memories. As we reflect upon this extraordinary soul, we find solace in the myriad lessons, stories, and love he shared. Isaac, your legacy is eternal. Rest in profound peace.
