Gregory Phillip Wilson, affectionately known as Greg, was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on November 26, 1953, Thanksgiving Day. He was the cherished son of Vera Shropshier Wilson and Leroy Eugene Wilson of Spartanburg, SC. Greg's early years were spent in Hendersonville, NC, before moving to Aiken, SC, in 1970.
Greg passed away on January 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and music. He is survived by his devoted wife, Melissa Vance Wilson, and their 4-legged girls Hope, Ruth, and Ruby; his loving sister, Pam Wilson Galardi; in-laws, nieces, nephews, and grand-niece and nephew.
Early Life and Education
Greg's passion for music began in the fifth grade as a band student. His talent and dedication led him to play in a band named Bull of the Woods, and he went on to graduate from Aiken High School. Greg's pursuit of music continued at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a BA in Music Education in 1978. He further honed his craft by obtaining a master’s degree in applied Saxophone Performance from the University of Texas in 1981.
Greg's musical journey was deeply influenced by Michael Brecker, and he found inspiration in his saxophone teachers, Doug Graham of USC and Al Regni of the University of Texas.
Career and Contributions
Greg's career was a harmonious blend of teaching and performing. He taught private lessons in several middle and high schools in the Austin area, nurturing the next generation of musicians. As a professional musician, Greg's versatility shone through as he played with numerous groups across various genres. He was a beloved figure in the Austin music community, known for his talent, dedication, and warm spirit. Greg also participated in many performances held at ZACH Theater.
A Life of Love
In 1995, Greg met the love of his life, Melissa. Their bond grew strong, and they married in 2002, embarking on a journey filled with love and shared dreams. Their favorite trip was an Alaskan cruise. Greg and Melissa made their home in Austin, TX, and throughout the years with many beloved rescue pets.

Greg will be remembered not only for his exceptional musical talent but also for his kindness, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, students, and the countless lives he touched through his music.
As we celebrate Greg's life, we honor the melodies he's left behind, echoing the beauty and passion with which he lived. Rest in peace, dear Greg. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
