Goldie Theresa Bienn Lockard, 91, passed away May 2, 2017 in Austin, Texas. She was born May 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She and her husband, Marvin S. Lockard, moved to Texas City in 1952 in search of job opportunities. They raised their two children in Texas City. Sadly, Marvin died in 1971. Their daughter, Katharine, had already entered college and married when Marvin died; the youngest child, Kenneth, was only six.
Goldie devoted herself to raising Kenneth on her own before being a single mother was so socially accepted. She had little family support as she undertook the task of raising her son. Most of her family remained in Louisiana. Both of her children look back with tremendous admiration for the loving care and devotion they both received from their mother.
In 1980, Goldie decided to move herself and her teenage son to Austin so they could be in the same city as her daughter and family. Goldie managed all the complicated tasks involved in a 200-mile move herself. She then found work with the Department of Transportation as an administrative assistant.
When Goldie retired, she continued her earlier efforts as a volunteer. She was among the first nursery caregivers at St. Louis Catholic Church and continued doing so for at least 15 years. Through the years she volunteered with the Church’s Loaves and Fishes outreach program for the homeless, as well as with the food pantry. The Church Bible Study Group was another of her favorite activities.
She enjoyed traveling to such diverse places as Maine, Mexico, Florida, and Las Vegas. She was an avid walker and enjoyed her time on bowling leagues in both Texas City and Austin.
Goldie is also predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Benjamin Bienn; sister, Sylvia Linton and various other relatives.
She is survived by two children, Katharine Lockard Ryan of Austin, Texas and Kenneth M. Lockard and wife Virginia of Gonzales, Texas; four grandchildren, Cailyn Ryan Bevier and husband Henry, Erinn Ryan, Nikole Lockard Hill and husband Brandon and Jacob Lockard; five great-grandchildren, Liam and Lucy Bevier, Travien Smith (son of Erinn Ryan) and Brandon and Zane Hill; niece, Becky Linton Albin and husband John; nephew, Benjamin Linton and wife Kit and their children.
Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas where she will be laid to rest next to her husband of 22 years.
In lieu of any flowers, any donations may be made in her memory to St. Louis Catholic Church, Austin, TX.
