George Mendoza, Sr., age 94, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, January 8, 2022. He went peacefully at his home in Austin, Texas. George was born February 7, 1927 to Arnulfo and Maria M. Mendoza, the oldest of 9 children in Liberty Hill, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Alfonso and Alex and his sister, Aurora.
In the early 1960’s, George accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He faithfully attended and served at several churches: El Buen Pastor Asamblea de Dios, Emmanuel Assembly of God, Central Assembly of God, King of Glory and lastly at Principe de Paz. Serving the Lord was an honor for him whether it was as an usher, Royal Ranger Commander, church deacon, bus driver, hosting several pastors, missionaries or students at his home, or giving countless rides to folks so they could attend church services. Throughout these years, many close friendships were formed and cherished for life.
George left a legacy of a strong work ethic. As a teenager, he worked on his parents’ farm to help his family farming cotton, corn and maize. Later when he married, he worked at Economy Furniture, alongside his brother Alfonso and his best friend Manuel. For several years, he would also work an additional two part time jobs per week where his kids got directly involved helping their dad the same way he helped his parents. George also worked for Austin ISD at several schools - TA Brown, Andrews, Blanton and Harris. Many children at these schools adopted him as “Grandpa Doza”.
His grandchildren will remember George as Grandpa, who always made them laugh, who was always there for celebrations or in hard times and one who was always ready to offer an ice cream cone. Everyone will remember him as a quiet man who spoke more with his actions, but when he did speak it was with words of encouragement, a funny story or a sweet blessing in prayer. To close family, he was a stubborn lil old man who’d try to sneak out and work on the yard without his cane and as his body got weaker, to shuffle down the hallway to eat at the table with the family. That kind of stubbornness is what we are thankful for. His stubbornness to pray each night, stubbornness to push through the pain to make his grandchildren smile and stubbornness to trust in his Lord to the end.
George is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary; children - David Mendoza, Gloria (Mario) Fuentes, Joe (Maria), George Jr (Leticia) Mendoza, Sylvia (Raymond) Rodriguez, Marie (Griselda) Valerio and Michelle Mendoza. His surviving siblings include, Esther Almanza, Elisa (Andres) Perez, Oralia Tello, Elva (Jesse) Sandoval and Dolores (Alfred) Flores, Eva Mendoza and Sylvia Mendoza.
In addition, he leaves behind grandchildren and great grandchildren.
