In 1968, he graduated from medical school in Saigon. In 1969, he married Tuyet Thi Lam and fathered three children. The Tran family escaped Vietnam and immigrated to the United States in 1975. With the Lord's blessings, Duc persevered many hardships to re-certify his medical degree and rebuild his family's future. By 1985, he brought his family to Austin where he achieved a lifetime dream of opening his own medical practice. His patients often recount his selfless acts of medical compassion.
Duc's faith and dedication to community flourished at the Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church. He co-founded the Holy League of the Sacred Heart, through which men unite in prayer and spiritual reflection. He served as an advisor on the church's parish council and is also remembered fondly by many members of the Cursillo movement, which evangelizes communities based on Christian values and the strength of personal conversion.
In 2000, Duc helped found the Austin Vietnamese-American Medical Professionals Society, which provides services to low-income families. He returned several times to Vietnam to serve the poor in his home country. His legacy embodies perseverance, education, and commitment of returning blessings to those less fortunate.
Duc was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He leaves behind to cherish his memories: wife, Tuyet Tran; daughter, Anh Thomas and husband Greg Thomas; son, Long Tran and wife Lien Nguyen; daughter Mai Ferrara; grandsons Ryan Thomas, Anthony Tran, Adam Tran, Max Ferrara, Nick Ferrara; brothers, sisters and many other family members and friends.
