Doris Louise “Grannie” Wilkins Freeman answered her call to eternal rest on Wednesday evening, February 17th at her home in Austin, Texas. She was married to Dea. Earlee Loyce Freeman for 52 years and they had one son, Anthony Earl Freeman, I.
Sis. Freeman began her spiritual journey at an early age at Main East Austin Baptist Church (now Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church aka “The Mount”) at an early age under the pastorate of Pastor L.V. Ates (“Uncle Doc”). She was active and visible in the life and ministry of The Mount and even served as a Guarantor along with her husband, Dea. Earlee Freeman. On June 30, 2018, she was honored for this commitment at the church’s dedication and entrance to the new location at 8500 Cameron Road. Her Monday mornings were joyful when she met up with her friends and fellow volunteers (Sis. Carolyn Harris, Sis. Lillie Ransom and Sis. Maureen Robinson) to do church work. She did this faithfully until she began to experience vision problems. She also served with this group in hosting bereaved families’ repasts. Previously, she was co-chair of the Pastor’s Aide Committee, a Deaconess, a Greeter with the Hospitality Committee and a Lambs’ Choir Sponsor. Her love of the WORD was not only evident by her regular Bible Study attendance but her faithfulness in completing homework assignments. In 2008, she began attending the Abundant LIFE Church (Pflugerville) in support of the vision of Founder/Pastor DeChard I. H. M. Freeman. She served as one of the first Ushers and was active with the Seniors’ Ministry (Saints Working to Advance Godliness - SWAG). However, she maintained her membership with Mt. Sinai under the leadership of Pastor A. W. Anthony Mays, until her death.
She was educated in the Austin Independent School District where she attended Rosewood Elementary, Kealing Junior High and was a proud graduate of Old Anderson High School. She continued her education and attended Brackenridge School of Nursing. She was employed by Brackenridge Hospital and retired after 30 years of service as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).
“Grannie” was an avid sports enthusiast supporting the Dallas Cowboys and University of Texas Longhorns. Yet, this support did not surpass her in-person attendance at McCallum High School basketball games to see Anthony, Stephan and Stephanie and even the Austin High football games for DeChard. She enjoyed family gatherings particularly the 4th of July and Christmas. Family vacations were calendar items and she didn’t miss the opportunity to go to Las Vegas or Atlantic City. In her quiet time she enjoyed cross-word puzzles, Word Find and Solitaire (computer style).
She was preceded in death by her husband, son, her mother, Sarah Wilkins and sister-in-love, Madelyn Wilkins. She leaves to bid her farewell her brother: Dea. Willie Wilkins; 7 grandchildren: Anthony (Tammie) Freeman, Tamiko Sion Tasby, Stephan (Katie) Freeman, Stephanie Freeman (David) Wright, DeChard (Kayla) Freeman, Jordan Nicole Dominique Jackson and Ariel Frazier-Freeman; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-love: Goldie Freeman, Mary Otis Gilbert and Susie Freeman and; many relatives and friends.
