David Lawrence Hanley, 62, of Pflugerville, Texas, passed in the early morning of November 5, 2020 at peace and in his home with loved ones. David had been fighting hard against glioblastoma since his initial diagnosis in February of 2019.
David “2-9” was born on September 5, 1958 in Topeka, Kansas, to Thomas Henry and Iva Pauline Hanley. He was the 4th child born to Tom and Polly with Thomas Henry Hanley, Diane Marie Bergin, Denise Nadine Hanley. He also became a big brother to Mark Donovan Hanley a few years later. David was an “Air Force brat” and moved multiple times with the family until Maj. Tom’s retirement landed the family in Pasadena, TX, where David lived until graduation from Sam Rayburn HS in 1976. He attended University of Houston and received a BA in Human Resources Management. After graduation, David worked in the oil and gas industry until finding his passion in the education system in 1999. He spent many years teaching Special Education students in Lake Travis, Llano, Austin, and Eanes school districts. David earned a Masters in Education from Texas State University in 2010. He returned to Texas State University to begin an administrative certification in Leadership. David was an avid cyclist during the second half of his life after he began riding in 2000, in memory of his late brother, Mark. That passion led David to ride many thousands of miles and made a number of friends along the way. Team Hanley created a tribal following and the “BOUFSPD” now spreads itself from Texas to Germany. A lifelong Roman Catholic, David rose to 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus organization. David’s passion was helping special needs populations through service & profession.
David is survived by his son, Clark Hanley and wife Brook, and daughter, Meg Hiney and husband Tyler. He leaves his grandchildren, Landon, Ashmore, Barrett, and Sullivan of Clark and Brook, along with Emily and Sadie of Meg and Tyler. He is also survived by his siblings, Tom Hanley and wife Sandy, Diane Bergin and husband Hugh, and Denise Hanley. He also leaves his mother, Polly.
Those that precede him in death are his father, Major (retired) Thomas Henry Hanley, brother Mark Donovan Hanley, and niece Lauren Marie Hanley.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 12, 2020 at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 408 Washburn St., Taylor, TX. A memorial gathering will follow at 2428 County Road 457, Thorndale, TX. Lunch and refreshments will be provided at the celebration.
In honor of David, and in lieu of flowers, we are requesting monetary donations be made to either the Special Olympics or the Musella Foundation (brain cancer research organization) to continue the work he conducted while he was on this Earth.
