Charles “Charley” Ray Scarborough, 88, of Round Rock, Texas, went home with the Lord on April 8, 2024. He was born in Coleman, Texas on August 26, 1935 to Charles Aubrey Scarborough and Fredna (Evans) Scarborough.
Charles graduated from Santa Anna High School in 1953. He married his 8th grade sweetheart, Rilda (Stephenson) Scarborough on April 3, 1954, traveling loyally by her side through their recent milestone, 70th wedding anniversary. He loved meeting and greeting people, working his way up from washing machine sales to store manager over 32 years with Montgomery Ward Stores, then successfully owning/operating Valpak of Austin for 19 years more. Charles was a leader in the Austin community from the 70s to early 2000’s, proudly leading and recruiting for the Austin Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, Central Texas Blood Bank, Austin Rotary Club, and other business and civic groups.
Yet he would tell you that his biggest achievement was his family and especially “his bride,” as he still lovingly referred to Rilda after a lifetime together. Charles and Rilda were among the founders of Round Rock Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Now an elder emeritus, his big heart and deep commitment to Jesus inspired a life of faithfully meeting, greeting and serving others. Charles’ generosity, charisma, goofy humor, and mischievousness won him loyal friends everywhere he went. Though he will be missed by many, Charles will lovingly - in spirit now - continue to greet folks, and “travel along, singing a song, side by side,” with Rilda and us all.
Charles is survived by wife Rilda; son Charles “Charley” David Scarborough (wife Carolyn Scarborough); daughter Carrol Scarborough; and grandchildren, Alix Scarborough (husband Alex “Xander” Cho) and Chloe Scarborough, along with numerous, loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents and brother, Glen David Scarborough.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Round Rock Christian Church (22 Chalice Way, Round Rock, TX 78665). Visitation begins at 11:30 a.m, with services at noon followed by a casual reception. A graveside gathering will be held at Santa Anna, TX Cemetery, the afternoon of Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
