Charles Otis Burke, Jr., born September 28, 1923, in Cameron, Milam County, Texas to Charles Otis Burke and Evva Jewell West, died peacefully in his home on July 5, 2017 at the age of 94. After two years in Cameron and 5 years in Giddings, he lived the rest of his life in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Austin High School in 1941.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on February 24, 1943 and participated in 35 bombing raids over Japan in a B-29 Super Fortress. In 1945, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with five bronze clusters. After earning a B.B.A degree with a major in Accounting from the University of Texas in 1953, he worked for the Heep Oil Company for one year and then as an Auditor with the Texas Education Agency for thirty-one years, retiring January 31, 1986.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and by his three sisters, Joyce Ann Burke Severs in 1997, Rebecca Louise Burke Grace in 1998 and Lillian Burke Stagg in 2014.
He is survived by his sister, Martha Burke Ray of Austin, Texas and his brother, Joe Henry Burke of Victoria, Texas as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie enjoyed a well-earned and lengthy retirement and spent his days sharing meals at Luby’s with family and friends, running and biking through the neighborhood, mastering the art of the computer and the World Wide Web and having many fun filled adventures with his devoted and often crazy niece, Evy Grace.
A Private Celebration of Life will be held at Luby’s on Saturday, September 29, 2018. There will be a graveside service, where military honors will be afforded on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Cook Walden Capital Parks Cemetery, Pflugerville, Texas at 3:30 P.M.
