Carl Laverne Vander Laan, 87, of Pflugerville, Texas, passed on to the Lord on August 25, 2023. He was born to parents, Harry and Jeanette Vander Laan in Coopersville, Michigan.
Carl enlisted in the Air Force in 1953. It was at Brown Swimming Pool in San Angelo, Texas where he met the love of his life, Marilyn Kay Mathis. He married Kay in 1955 and spent the next 20 plus years serving his country proudly including two tours to Vietnam. Carl was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross medal for his heroism during his service. He retired in 1973 after settling in the Austin area.
Carl and Kay were married for 64 plus years. He is survived by his children Greg (Glenda), Rodney (Melinda), and D’Ann. He loved and cherished his seven grandchildren, Chris Vander Laan, Ryan Vander Laan (Jen), Mary Hegel (Mike), Clint Rice (Kristen), Lenae Beran (Dwayne), Lauren Henkes (Brandon), Haley Love (Brannan), and 13 great grandchildren. Carl was predeceased by wife, Marilyn Kay Vander Laan, by his daughter, Margo Jeanette Rice, and his parents.
A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North Interstate 35 in Pflugerville, Texas. Carl will be buried with military honors in a private ceremony beside his wife at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
