Bill was born on July 9, 1938, in Ferris, TX to Clarence and Blanche Britton. After Bill graduated from Ferris High School in 1957, he went on to attend college on a football scholarship at North Texas State. He left college 14 credits shy of a degree in Human Resources to care for his ailing father. He was unable to serve his country during the Vietnam Conflict due to a childhood injury but seized an opportunity to do his duty with Collins Radio. While working there he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling the world.
In 1967 he married the love of his life Kay Britton and became a devoted father to her daughter Brandy. Bill and Kay moved to Greenville, Texas in 1974 to get back to his country roots. The family of four raised cows, horses, a goat, sheep, rabbits, chickens, a pig, a stock pond full of catfish, and countless dogs and cats. Job opportunities took them to Taylor, then to Lubbock, back to the Austin area and return to Lubbock where they made many lifelong friends and fond memories.
After his dear wife of 42 years passed away in September 2008, Bill found a fun-loving companion in his wife Joyce and moved to Sun City, Texas. He continued to work as a furniture salesman until retiring in 2011.
Bill enjoyed playing golf with his “breakfast buddies”, barbecuing, tinkering on projects, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered by all that had the pleasure of his company as the man with a quick joke, a Robert Redford smile, a mischievous gleam in his eye, and the warmest of hearts.
Bill was predeceased by Clearance and Blanche Britton (parents), Harold Britton (brother), Howard Britton (brother) Patsy Penick (sister), Pam Penick (niece), and wife Kay Britton. He is survived by his wife Joyce Britton of Georgetown, two devoted daughters Brandy Boswell of Austin; Shannon Bartlett and husband Brian of Nolanville, TX; along with his grandchildren Abby Williams of Taylor, Zach Williams of Pensacola, Sydney Amell of Austin, and grandchildren through marriage; Makenna Bartlett of Tyler, and Logan Bartlett of Austin.
The family would like to request memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com for the Britton family.
