Arthur Charles Harbison was born on June 26, 1951, in Chicago Illinois to his parents Charles and Marilyn Harbison. He moved from Chicago to Penn Hills Pennsylvania, then Mars Pennsylvania where he grew up with his 5 siblings doing normal stuff.
While living in Mars he met Sherry who later, after graduation, became his bride of 52 years.
When Art was in High School, he worked as a welder. After Art and Sherry married, he worked as a diesel mechanic before taking a job with IBM, as a tech specialist.
During his time with IBM Art became interested in Emergency Services. He was a founding father of 2 ambulance services in the North Pittsburgh area. At this time, he was the second “Level 2 Paramedic” in the state of Pennsylvania. While living in Pennsylvania Art also spent time working as a volunteer fireman and became an avid outdoorsman who loved to canoe.
As an IBM employee Art’s career quickly grew and he was asked to relocate his family to Austin, Texas. While in living in Austin and working for IBM, Art was able to travel to Germany, Japan, and Sweden where his ancestors are from. After 34 years of working in the computer industry, Art retired as IBM’s leading expert for the Linux Operating System.
Upon retirement Art rekindled his love for riding motorcycles and photography. He would go on long motorcycle rides for enjoyment. One of his favorite riding trips was to Big Bend. He called this “God’s Country”. He loved taking pictures, especially of our family and friends. He was a proud Father and Grandfather, “PaPa Art”, to his grandchildren. He enjoyed attending the grandkids concerts and softball games.
Art is survived by his wife Sherry; his 3 daughters Yarda (Tony), Stacy (Matt) and Sara (Van); 4 grandchildren Jack, Jonathan, Jocelyn, and Samantha; and 5 siblings Jody, Suzie, Bob, Paul, and John; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Art is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Marilyn Harbison.
