Anna Louise and Harold started school together at St. Louis Catholic School in Castroville, with both graduating in 1949. Anna Louise attended Our Lady of the Lake College for one year before transferring to Incarnate Word College where she received her BSN in Nursing in 1953. Upon graduating, she worked as a staff nurse for Dr. J. D. Williamson at the Castroville Hospital and Clinic.
Anna Louise married Harold on January 10, 1954 and they immediately moved to Austin. A honeymoon baby was the beginning of their large, dysFUNctional clan.
In Austin, Anna Louise was a staff nurse in the maternity unit of Seton Hospital, where she was later recruited to teach at Seton School of Nursing. She then enjoyed a few years as a stay-at-home mom to her seven, most often pleasant, children. All were born at her beloved Seton Hospital.
When most of the children began attending school, Anna Louise returned to teaching, this time at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. While teaching, she completed requirements for a Master’s in Nursing degree. During her tenure at UT she was proud to have had the opportunity to mentor a niece, Tricia Tschirhart Rochat, as she pursued her nursing degree.
Throughout her nursing career, she was consistently active in nursing organizations, serving as Executive Secretary of Texas Nursing Association (TNA) for 25 years and President of Sigma
Theta Tau for 4 years. In 1984 she was honored as the District 5 Nurse of the Year by TNA. Her entire family, including her parents, were present to celebrate this exceptional award.
In 1994 Anna Louise retired from UT School of Nursing after 26 years as a tenured Assistant Professor. During retirement she continued her nursing work on a part-time basis for St. David’s Hospital performing bone density procedures. In addition, she filled her time babysitting grandchildren and caring for ill or injured friends. She also enjoyed ushering at the UT Performing Arts Center where she was able to take in many Broadway performances.
The family have been members of St Louis Catholic Church in Austin since 1958. During her retirement years she enjoyed serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Mass and for residents in nursing homes. She also enjoyed the spiritual and social activities as a member and officer of the Women’s Club and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.
Words cannot express how much this incredible woman will be missed by family and friends, and friends of friends!
We love you mom!
