July 1, 1929-Oct. 10, 2022
Peacefully, with dignity and grace, in her 94th year, with her family at her side. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Robert (1990). Beloved mother to Cathy (Larry Langdon) and Mark (Mary Anne Beaudette), loving grandmother to Scott Card (Melissa McCulloch) and Jack Seymour (Ashley McIntyre) and great-grandmother to Finlay (Scott) and Emma (Jack). Dear sister to Beverly, and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was born in 1929 to Leonard and Phyllis Watkiss (Cole) in Peterborough, where she spent most of her life. Family was important to her, and she was one of the only people we knew whose friendships went back to kindergarten days! Shirley was a wife, mother, champion pie-baker and dinner-maker, fiendishly clever bridge-player, and inveterate dispenser of advice. She loved dancing, entertaining, cold martinis, pink carnations, fashionable clothing, gardening and travel. She could bone a walleye with surgical precision, and was our “Google” for all matters relating to family history. Some of her fondest memories were of berry-picking and card games at the cottage with her family, and she formed a special bond with grandson Scott during his years at Trent University. In her later years she expanded her horizons with travels to the U.S. and Europe, and confronted serious health challenges without losing her zest for life. For the past seven years she was a resident at the John M. Parrott Centre in Napanee, ON and we are very grateful to the staff for their care and many kindnesses during her time there.
Visitation will be at Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough on Friday, October 28th at 2 pm, followed by funeral service at 2:30 pm.
